Asbestos Removal

Asbestos fencing is a hazardous material and its removal needs to be carried out by trained and experienced operators who are licensed with Work Safe. Occupational Safety and Health Regulations require operators to have a "Restricted Asbestos License" if removing more than10 square metres of bonded asbestos. All contractors who remove asbestos fencing in Perth are required to undertake a "Restricted Asbestos License Training Course." This is for non friable asbestos products. Products like asbestos fencing where the asbestos fibers are bonded in to the cement when it was made. Further to this all businesses must have a Work Safe license identification card. Procedure for removing asbestos fence from your home or commercial property.

• Once on site we do a safe work procedure as per Work Safe requirements and notify neighbors and bystanders that we are about to remove asbestos fence sheets.
• We place a caution asbestos fence removal sign in plain sight and barricade off the area if required from the public.
• We then put on disposable overalls and safety respirators designed for the use of removing asbestos.
• If required we will spray the asbestos fence with a low pressure PVA spray to seal any loose asbestos fibers that may be disturbed. Otherwise we use a low pressure Wetta-soil during the procedure. Whilst removing asbestos fence sheets the sheets remain wet at all times until on the plastic ready for wrapping.
• All bolts where possible are then unbolted, removed and disposed of with the asbestos fence sheets.
• We then dig along the fence line down to the bottom of the asbestos sheets. As we dig down we continue to wet the asbestos sheets.
• The asbestos fence sheets are dug out of the ground and then completely removed, as a whole sheet.
• The asbestos sheets are then wrapped in 2 micron thick black plastic and taped closed to stop any dust or fibers escaping. Asbestos sheets are then taken to an approved refuse site for disposal.
• When we are satisfied all the asbestos is removed we go over our Safety plan and sign the area clear of asbestos fence material if clear.

What is asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral found in the surface of the earth. It contains strong fibers that have excellent durability, fire resistance and insulating properties. Asbestos fibers are 50 to 200 times thinner than a human hair, can float in the air for a long time, can be invisible to the naked eye and can be breathed into the lungs. In the past, asbestos was mined from the ground and manufactured into many different materials. Materials containing asbestos were very common in the Australian residential building industry between the 1940s and late 1980s before their production stopped.

How to tell if my fence is asbestos?

It can be difficult to tell whether your fence has materials containing asbestos in it just by looking. As a general rule, if your fence was installed;

• 1.Before the mid 1980s, it is highly likely that it would have materials containing asbestos.
• 2.Between the mid 1980s and 1990, it is likely that it may have materials containing asbestos.
• 3.After 1990, it is highly unlikely it would have materials containing asbestos.
• 4.If you are not sure that a material contains asbestos, play it safe and assume that it does.

Wrapping Asbestos Fencing

Asbestos fencing must be wrapped before being transported or disposed of.

• All asbestos that is to be transported must be wrapped in black builders plastic no thinner than 0.2mm.
• When wrapping asbestos fencing sheets we wrap the bundles the same way you wrap a present. The only difference is that all joins are taped securely closed with PVC tape.
• On corners we wrap packing to prevent the corner of the asbestos sheets breaking through the plastic.
• Where rope or tie down straps touch the plastic we use packing and extra tape. On the bottom where placed on timber for transport we use packing to prevent the plastic rubbing through.
